Many of us find absolutely no harm in giving out an address and phone number. We wonder how doing this could cause any real trouble. It actually might. I was completing an online survey. I am addicted to the surveys in a way and I have never experienced any trouble in the past. Almost immediately the online survey asked for my address and phone number. I could see giving my address because they were going to send me a gift certificate for diapers. I just could not understand why they wanted my phone number as well. I reluctantly gave both my address and phone number. I then continued with the survey. It was very long and tedious, taking about twenty minutes or so to complete. I finally thought that I was done with the survey, but I was not. In order to receive my gift I had to give my address and phone number to another survey topic. Even though my inner voice was telling me to stop, I completed the additional survey. After I finished the online form and hit the continue key, another survey came up. Again they said that if I wanted the prize I had to sign on to three topics of interest. Again they requested my address and phone number. I finally finished the task of filling these forms out and made it to the finish button. I gleefully clicked the button and went on with my day. Several days had passed since I filled out the surveys. I had all but forgotten giving out my address and phone number. About a week later though, I was reminded. My home mailbox was overflowing with advertisements. Day after day I was receiving solicitations for everything from shoes to wheelchairs. I saw the mailings as an inconvenience and a shameful waste of paper, but did not know how to stop the solicitations without calling the company. About two weeks from filling out the surveys, I was reminded that I gave out both my address and phone number. The calls started. I was receiving calls almost on a daily basis and for multiple things. It seems that any companies that I marked off as a subject of interest were calling and writing me. I changed my telephone number and I now have a lot of kindling paper for my fireplace. Sometimes it is not a good idea to give out both address and phone number.
